The story of Sherlock Holmes Tartan

Sherlock Holmes is the first fictional character to have tartan designed in his name. This is a tartan imbued with Sherlockian lore. It was brought to life by designer Tania Henzell, who is also the step-great-great granddaughter of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the legendary author of the Sherlock Holmes novel series. Tania’s green and blue tartan creation is based on fictional literature but also rooted in real Scottish heritage, which gives the Sherlock Holmes Tartan range its distinctive appearance and undeniable grandeur.

The story behind the original green and blue Scottish tartan

When Tania presented her idea to the Scottish Registry of Tartan, they accepted the design on the grounds that there was a story and meaning behind the choice of colours. The muted greens and elegant blues of the original Scottish tartan design reflects the heritage of Sir Arthur, who was of Irish descent and born in Scotland. The design also features a thin blue line which is symbolic of Reichenbach Falls. Sherlockians will know that this is the location where Sherlock Holmes faced his nemesis Professor Moriarty at the end of “The Final Problem”. Finally the lavish gold strip represents Holmes’ unrivalled detective skills.

This rich backstory and unique symbolism of the Sherlock Holmes Tartan design makes anything from the range a striking statement piece. And if the story of this tartan somehow still isn’t authentic enough for you, the design has been officially endorsed by the Conan Doyle estate itself.
